The Design Minute : Angelo Mangiarotti
Every week, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche takes you on a journey to discover the great names in architecture and design that have marked its history. Today, let's highlight noble materials and monochrome colors... Italian design, the great seductor!
Here is the story of a duo from the Eros collection to be found soon in the basement of our store.
Angelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan in 1921. After his studies at the Milan Polytechnic, he left to teach in the United States where he met the best of modern design and architecture, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Angelo Mangiarotti shows ingenuity in his designs. He created the famous Eros collection in the 1970s. The tables and pedestal tables of this collection are composed of conical legs embedded in a Carrara marble top.
The whole is held together without any fixings or joints, solely by the force of gravity. Circular cut-outs in each top accommodate the tapered legs with precision and elegance. The round shapes contrast with the apparent coldness of the marble. We can admire the purity and the ingenious composition of this black and white duo.
