Couture house Balmain was created in 1945 under the leadership of Pierre Balmain, a French couturier who wanted to create an image of the active and slightly impertinent woman, in contrast to the end of the austere war period. He was known for his ""New French Style"", and launched fast, opulent and playful collections. His feminine ready-to-wear collections embody a passionate, but still structured, style. The ""Jolie Madame"" look has endured over the decades since, while incorporating trends for baroque style and military-rock design. Among its most beautiful pieces is the very lovely ""Le Pierre"" bag, the blazer with shining metallic buttons, and of course the sophisticated tweed jackets.
