Meet Chiharu Shiota
"Where are we going?", the monumental exhibition by Chiharu Shiota
This year, Le Bon Marché has the honour to welcome Chiharu Shiota for a monumental exhibition at the heart of the department store: "Where are we going?". Interview with an uncommon artist.
Where are we going? What does the title mean?
The title is precisely trying to raise the question of uncertainty in our journey of life. We are ready to go but we don’t know exactly where we are heading. Each day we are targeted with a huge amount of information which makes it easier and faster to reach.
But our human body is not adapting and changing at the same speed so it is becoming more complex to find the real meaning of life. We follow a life line full of obstacles which interfere with our true sense of belonging. The more convenient it is to live, the more difficult it seems to gain awareness of the steps and purpose in life. We zigzag along the journey of life but where are we going?
How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork at Le Bon Marché?
I am very grateful and very much looking forward to exhibiting my work in such a historical space.
Le Bon Marché is not a gallery space in itself. People come in to shop, but Le Bon Marché has a tradition in welcoming artists which I find very interesting and challenging. I like the idea of combining both concepts: shopping and art.
Can you tell us about your knitting techniques?
I weave thread as if I were drawing lines in the air following a triangle pattern.
Where are you going in 2017?
I have over 19 exhibitions next year and I will start the year with Le Bon Marché. I will be travelling back and forth around the world where my exhibitions will take place. As any other new year I hope people continue enjoying my work and I hope everybody has a good start into the new year.
