The MoMA in Le Bon Marché

Design | OCT 31, 2017

The Museum of Modern Art is moving into the BOOK AND STATIONERY SHOP of Le Bon Marché

In 1932, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was the first art museum to establish a curatorial department dedicated to Architecture & Design, and by mid-century, it was playing a leading role in defining and promoting the values of “Good Design.”

As an extension of the Museum’s educational mission, MoMA Design Store exemplifies good design with a well-edited selection of products highlighting the latest in materials, production, and design concepts from around the world.

In celebration of Fondation Louis Vuitton’s exhibition Etre moderne: Le MoMA à Paris, on view at Fondation Louis Vuitton from October 11, 2017, through March 5, 2018, Le Bon Marché will present a pop-up shop featuring products from MoMA Design Store.

  • This Book is a Camera -

This working camera in a pop-up book is a fun and educational way to learn about the basic principles of photography. The book concisely explains- while actively demonstrating- how a structure as humble as a folded piece of paper can tap into the intrinsic properties of light to produce a photograph. Easily turn a room in your home into a darkroom and process photos using household supplies. The book includes a working paper camera with pinhole lens, a lightproof bag with five sheets of photo paper and development instructions.

  • Yoshitomo Nara: Welcome Girl Skateboard -

This skateboard features a reproduction of the artwork Welcome Girl (2017) by Japanese painter, sculptor and draughtsman Yoshitomo Nara, an artist represented in MoMA’s collection. Made in Canada of 7 ply maple wood. Since the mid-1990s, Japanese born artist Yoshitomo Nara has become known for this playful yet bold images, his mindfulness in determining how and where his art will be seen and for the close personal connection to his art’s creation. Nara selects colors that breathe life into his figures; his sculptures bear traces of his fingers, and the spontaneity of his drawings are born of a daily discipline of experimentation.

- Mondrian Color-Changing Mug - Feel like a trip to MoMA with this ceramic black-and-white patterned mug. When hot liquid is poured in, the grid magically transforms into a design inspired by the art of Piet Mondrian.

- Yoshimoto MoMA Logo Tote - Japanese artist Naoki Yoshimoto is best known for designing his namesake puzzle cubes. This geometric interpretation of the Museum's logo was created after the artist received a set of colored pencils as a gift from MoMA.
