Our booksellers selection for this Summer

Summer is finally here and it is time to take time for oneself. Next to your swimsuit and sun cream, do not forget to bring some books in your suitcase to keep you company on the beach.

To help you find the one that will keep you out of breathe all Summer long, Emmanuelle, Jade, Romain, Christine et Carole, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche's booksellers, have picked their favorite book for you. Please take a seat and let the magic happen!

Friends trip

Shining sun, nice terraces and deep swimming: the scenery is set for a friendship between two very alive women. One of them is the writer, Goliarda Sapienza, both weak and strong. According to this famous Italian author, all ways to freedom must come from an early immoral act and the main character of this story makes no exception. An extravagant story!

Christine's advice: "This book will take you to the rocks of the Amalfi Coast, in the village of Positano. Italy's charm is the background of an overwhelming female friendship."

Despite a cozy atmosphere, the psychological crescendo is undeniable in this thriller. It's Summertime, the swimming pool is welcoming, the city is crowded and the food tastes good. James Lasdun describes deeply and maliciously his characters in detail. He takes his time. He leaves evidences without caution, to the delight of his readers who enjoy this glittery sociological tale.

Christine's advice: "Passion, drama, betrayal, adultery and murder are all gathered in this plot which takes scene in a fancy villa lost in the mountains. A delightful thriller that will grab your attention this Summer."

Feet in the water

RÊVER LARGE, François Gabart
This book is about Vincent Gabart, the professional skipper who won the Vendée Globe race in 2013 as well as the Route du Rhum the following year. It describes the journey of a man always moving and looking for some new challenges to reach. François Gabart, experienced and passionate sailor, offers us a true immersion in the sailing world.

Emmanuelle's advice: "According to me, sailing is a perfect thema for Summer and makes you travel and dream. This story is also the living testimony of the adventures of a well-known sailor, who spent most of his life offshore."

JOURS BARBARES, William Finnegan
Not only a talented journalist, several times awarded for its work about the African conflicts, Finnegan is also a hard-working surfer who tells us how he discovered surf in Hawaii when he was young. From now on, he never stopped to hunt the dream wave and talks about American youth, looking for sense and freedom. Better hold on tight!

Romain's advice: "With this autobiographical narrative, William Finnegan makes us discover his favorite sport, surf. Heavily documented about surf and its universe, it's above all a book about the feeling of freedom."

Breeze of art

NOA NOA, Paul Gauguin
Discover Gauguin's diary when he came back from Tahiti in 1893: a transporting, perfumed and colorful narrative in which the painter mixes genders and shades. NOA NOA is also a precious documentary about the Maori way of life as well a perfect approach to better understand Gauguin's paintings.
Gauguin tends to write an essay on Tahiti's cosmogony and to explain it to Europe with the fresh look he gained whe he visited the island.

Carole's advice: "Paul Gauguin must be one of the greatest French painters of the 19th century. This diary he wrote during his first trip to Tahiti will make you discover the many-facetted world of a major artist as well as the discover of an exotic and transporting place."

EROÏCA, Pierre Ducrozet
Basquiat's art can be defined as rough and violent, such as Basquiat's life. EROÏCA is the biography of a Black artist living in New York City in the 1970s. He walks through life, come what may, and mixes his paintings and relatives in a self-defeating spiral. The reader dips into New York City and follows the hero or anti-hero Basquiat for a decade. Ducrozet's writing style is moving and fascinating, as well as Basquiat's brush on the painting.

Jade's advice: "Lovers of art and painting will dip into Basquiat's life. Meanwhile you discover the dreams and hopes of a talented and troubled genius, you will learn a lot about him."
